Hyundai Heavy Industries’ (HHI) new vessel technology known as Thrust Fin, and when attached to a ship’s rudder, it will boost thrust while saving fuel at the same moment. To prove the credibility of such technology, HHI attached the Thrust Fin to the rudder of a 8,600-TEU container ship delivered to German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd in April. According to Hapag, that fin was extremely effective and they

have already placed an order for half a dozen more such fins. Apparently, that fin will reduce fuel consumption by up tp 6% at best, and could conclusion in an annual saving of up to $2.4 million in fuel expense.
