University to Develop GPS for NASA. For the Moon!

NASA has awarded a $1.2 million contract to Ohio State University to develop a kind of GPS SYSTEM FOR THE MOON that doesn’t involve regular GPS satellites. Called the Lunar Astronaut Spatial Orientation and data System (LASOIS), the

system will use lunar beacons, stereo cameras and orbital imaging sensors that will enable astronauts and robots to pinpoint their locations on the moon’s surface. They’re hoping to go operational on the system by 2020.
